What I Got Up To This Month (March '24)

Ah, March. We're a quarter of the way through the year and I'm still truckin' along. I haven't done some of the personal things I've wanted to achieve but I've continued to see a therapist and that's been helpful.

For the first half of the month I was making steady progress on my horror game marathon. I started the month by finishing off Resident Evil 4 and, you know what, that totally deserves its title as one of the greatest games of all time. After that I played Silent Hill: Origins which was... fine? It's short and doesn't do anything revolutionary but it's a solid Silent Hill game. I followed that up with Resident Evil: The Umbrella Chronicles which was a decent lightgun shooter. Not really my type of game, but it's good for what it is. I then played Silent Hill: Homecoming which was probably my least favorite Silent Hill. Something about it just felt off in a way that was hard for me to articulate but I don't completely hate it, all things considered. I had planned to continue this horror marathon but, well, Dragon's Dogma 2 came out.

I've also been watching some stuff. I'm still watching The Bad Batch and Delicious in Dungeon (I also still think Dungeon Meshi has a better ring to it and I wish they'd have kept the title as that). I got caught up on Invincible and that show is excellent. While it's easy to view it as a deconstruction of some superhero tropes, it's also a totally solid execution of some of those tropes making it a worthwhile superhero story in its own right. Lastly, I finished watching Nichijou and that show was an absolute delight. Not the sort of thing I'd typically seek out but it was heartfelt at times and, more importantly, incredibly funny.

At the start of the month I was slowly working my way through Dune because Part 2 had just released and I wanted to finish the book before seeing it. I made it about halfway through the book before plans were set to see it, so I spent one weekend watching the first movie for the first time, then quickly reading the second half of the book, before finally watching the second film. I had one very intense Dune weekend and it ruled. Dune is great.

I've been playing a few multiplayer games as well. A little bit of Helldivers 2 still, a bit of Fortnite, and even a bit of Splatoon 3 because I've been trying to get back into that. The game's still good and I'm probably going to finally give that single-player a shot (and the new Side Order DLC, since that seems neat).

Zeke, Shadowheart, and Pikachu: The perfect party
I mentioned it earlier but I have been playing a lot of Dragon's Dogma 2. I'm no stranger to the franchise; I played about two dozen hours of Dark Arisen, but this game has its hooks in me in a way the original never quite did. It might just be because this game's in the zeitgeist and is having a cultural moment of sorts (a thing I may write about in more detail later) but it's reminding me of when I played Elden Ring and Tears of the Kingdom when those were both fresh and it's been so much fun to explore a game like this before it's been fully opened up and dissected by the Internet.
