What I Got Up To This Month (August '24)

It's the end of August so that means it's time for another one of these. On a somewhat similar note to what I had to say last month, I reached out to a friend I haven't spoken to in years and had a lovely conversation with him. It was nice reconnecting with someone who I used to be super close with, it's been far too easy to let friendships and connections fall by the wayside with how busy life can get so I'm glad I took the effort to try to patch things up.

This was largely a last month thing, but because of Deadpool and Wolverine (a movie I enjoyed) I decided to play through X-Men Origins Wolverine. Unlike the movie it's loosely based on, this game is good. Very good. Mechanically it's a pretty straightforward and simple action game with basic combos, grabs, and lunges to mix things up, but it's very bloody and violent and, as such, it's quite the spectacle. They managed to get Hugh Jackman to reprise his role for this and he's good enough, though the story's not much to write home about. Some fun cameos and appearances from characters who weren't in the movie (Mystique and a Sentinel, to name two) and you can wear a classic Wolverine costume and basically pretend this game has nothing to do with the movie. All in all it was a fun time.

This was also a thing I was up to last month but forgot to mention in my monthly wrapup for July,  but a new EDF came out and I've been playing a lot of that too. It's excellent, it's basically just more EDF5. I loved the heck out of that game and I've been eagerly anticipating this sequel for quite some time, so I'm glad that it turned out good. It's hard to explain why this game is as good as it is, but trust me: if you want something video gamey to play it's hard to find something better than this. The story also goes to some wacky places which has been a pleasant surprise considering I wasn't expecting much of a plot to begin with.

I've played a lot of Dragon Age: Inquisition this month and I've been remembering what I liked (and didn't like) about it. They announced that The Veilguard is coming out on Halloween so I've got until then to finish this (and the tie-in novels and comics I plan to read) and with any luck I should have more than enough time to do all I want to do. I still really like this game despite its flaws (it's too darn big and empty and tedious at times) and I'm remembering why I liked the Inquisitor so much.

My horror marathon has stalled somewhat. I was playing Resident Evil 6 with another person but they're currently in the middle of moving so I've put that game on the backburner while I tackle other things. I've been enjoying that game though (we finished the Chris campaign at the beginning of the month) so I'm looking forward to getting back to it. Because I'm committed to taking these games on in chronological order that's sadly meant that I don't have anything new to share on this front however. It's also why this blog's been inactive for a bit. Still, as you can see from the rest of this post, I've been keeping busy.
